End of Year Notes

5/8/2016

.Hard to believe but we are already looking forward to Summer Break!  Where did this year go?!  Just a few notes to help you help us prepare for the end of the year:

Book checkout will continue at teacher discretion until May 24th.  No students or staff will be allowed to checkout materials after May 24th.  Please start returning all books and materials to the Learning Commons ASAP.   Officially all books are due May 24th but we would really like to see everything returned ASAP.
  • We will print overdue notices frequently over the coming weeks, please send these home with students and encourage them to clean out desks, lockers, cubbies, bedrooms, cars, etc.  and locate as many missing books as possible.  Students are responsible for the cost for lost books and these will follow them to the next grade (including Middle School).
  • Many books "walked" out of the Learning Commons this year.  Please help us encourage students to bring ALL Malvern Library books back, not just those on their lists.  There is currently a prize being offered especially for Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
  • We will give team leads the list of books checked out for your grade level.  Please make every attempt to find and return these books, as they will be needed again next year.
  • Textbooks also need to be accounted for.  We are attempting to complete this ASAP and get you missing book lists.  Please help us by looking for these items in classrooms and with students.  If needed we can also search textbook closets.

Book Fair IS next week, May 16-18.  May 12 & 13 are Book Fair preview, checkout the schedule here.  More information about the Spring Extravaganza and Book Fair will be coming soon.

Teachers who plan to return to Malvern (MALVERN) next year are allowed to checkout their laptop and iPad over the summer.  To do this you will need to do two things: 1. Physically bring each to the Learning Commons to be renewed and 2. Complete and electronically sign summer checkout policy for teacher iPad and teacher laptop.

All other iPads and the laptops of teachers not returning to MISD MUST be completely reset and all iTunes accounts logged off (ESPECIALLY personal accounts), pass-codes removed and returned to the Learning Commons BEFORE 6/4.   If you need help with this, please ask Miss Hefley.
Directions to Clear and Reset Laptop

Directions to Clear and Reset iPads

IF you have experienced any issues with technology (iPads, your laptop, your Smart Board, etc.) that have not been resolved or that you have simply been living with, PLEASE put help tickets in NOW so it can be fixed ASAP so we start the next school year on the right foot without those technology issues.  Just like teachers, the techs cannot come into Malvern over the summer....so it is best to get things fixed ASAP.

Yearbooks:  We have 50-60 Extra Yearbooks to sell.  Parents are still welcome to purchase these in the main office or Learning Commons for $15.

Clubs:  The last Club's time for grades 3-5 (and K-2 Coding Club) is Friday May 13th from 2-3pm.

Final Friday Live:  The final combined Friday Live and Deans list assemblies are THURSDAY May 26th.
Grades 3-5: 8:05-8:50am.  Pictures will immediately follow in the cafeteria with ALL award winners 8:50 - 9:05.  Please plan to have one teacher per grade stay with these students.
Grades K-2: 9-9:45am.  Pictures to follow in cafeteria 9:45-10. Please plan to have one teacher per grade stay with these students.
Note:
4th grade gym will take place outside or in the Learning Commons.

Maker Faire:  Just to see who reads all the way to the bottom of this long but important message.  I am considering holding a "Maker Faire"  May 31-June 2.  This Faire would involve class challenges for each day with school-wide competition.  It would also involve Explorer Stations (activities for 2-4 student teams) set up in the Learning Commons.  To sign your class up to participate in competitions or for time to visit the stations each day please complete this form.  Time slots are limited and we will honor first come first serve, but please be considerate and only select Station times that you really can commit to.

Spring Extravaganza

Get out your calendars and block off the evening of May 16th for Malvern's Spring Extravaganza!  This is going to be (what I hope will be the first annual) a BIG EVENT (and fundraiser) for Malvern, our students and families.

May 16th from 5-7pm is the Malvern Spring Extravaganza.  Not only will the Book Fair be open this night, we will host the In and Out Burger truck (look for information about tickets soon) AND we will host our first Cardboard Challenge Arcade with games will be set up in the Gym for all students to play (much like the fall carnival).

How Teachers can help:
1. Promote the Cardboard Challenge!  Either schedule a time with Miss Hefley to share information about this challenge with your class OR using this slide show talk to your class about the Challenge.
2. Send home the Cardboard Challenge Handout to parents, please consider ALSO sending this electronically (PDF Version: English, Spanish)
3.  Help with the collection of recycled materials and making students aware of what supplies you might be able to help with.  Kids can use anything from small toys, to paper cups and plates, paper towel rolls, etc.
4. Volunteers are needed with set-up, clean-up and with various stations at this HUGE event.  It will not be possible without your help!  Please help us make this a memorable night for our students, families and a worthwhile fundraiser for Malvern too.  Complete this form to sign up as a volunteer.
5. Donate. Our largest prize for the arcade games will be a GIANT TUB of PRIZES (I will reveal one more thing on announcements each day for the tub).  I already plan to put in certificates for Extra Recess for your entire class, Free Computer Time for your entire class and Free Reading Time in the Learning Commons for your entire class but it could use Gift Cards, Toys, Books or other materials you might be able to donate.

Bright Bytes Survey

2/23/2016

Picture
Our school will be partnering with BrightBytes, an educational research and analytics organization, so that we can learn more about our school’s technology use for student learning. Our goal is to gather metrics on technology access and skills, and on our school’s technology environment, in order to understand the connection between technology use and student achievement. This will be done through a comprehensive framework called CASE that looks at the Classroom factors, Access to technology, teacher and student Skills and Environmental factors.

To gain these insights, we must provide BrightBytes with a complete picture of technology use at school and at home. We will be asking students, teachers, and parents to participate in the project and to provide input.

Your participation is important to us and will make the difference between having a complete versus a limited understanding of our school’s technology use.  All links for this survey can be found on the Malvern LC home page.  Please help us by:

1. Taking the Teacher & Staff survey: http://www.bbyt.es/Q63DT
2. Arrange a time for all students Grades 3-5 to come to the library and take the student survey.  This CAN also be taken on any computer or device.
3. Encouraging parents to take the survey.  We will have all computers set up for this during Open House.  It is on the homepage, it is on FB, PLEASE share it with all parents and encourage participation.

Explorer Stations
Please use these however you can.  Individual kids, small groups or whole class. I created a great handout about this space, if you have volunteers or mentors that visit the LC with your students, please consider printing this and giving them a copy.  If YOU have something you would like to see in the Explorers Stations please let me know!  I am always open to ideas and would love to see more kids using this.   If you have specific EXPECTATIONS for your students, please talk to them about these ahead of time and if possible send something with them that communicates this (sticky note, handout, anything).  If I can help make use of these stations better for teachers, PLEASE let me know!
Current Explorer Station:  Create a Valentine
Please feel free to send students to the LC to create some great valentines!  Feel free to add your own twist or rules to the challenge.   For example 4th grade is working on prefixes and suffixes so they might require students to create a valentine using at least one of each, or have a contest to see which Valentine can be written using the MOST prefixes and suffixes.
Former Explorer Stations:  These are available on the MalvernLC weebly and in a binder in the LC.  Students are always welcome to go back and revisit old challenges.

Announcements:  We are trying to make announcements more interesting.  Our announcers love to add the jokes and the riddles are their idea too.  For the riddle I am going to try to make it more high tech and immediate.  Your class should listen closely and the first class to TEXT me with the correct answer will be our winners.  We will announce the winner that day!

March is READING Month!  We have a lot planned!
  • Dr. Seuss Reading is Awesome K-3 assembly 8:30am on March 2nd.  I need many volunteers to help:
    • Teachers willing to challenge a student in Dr Seuss TRIVIA
    • A Cat in the Hat MC:  would you be GREAT at this?!  I will help, but I need someone to lead the cheers (and wear the cat suit)!
    • We will also do some singing and just get pumped for READING!
  • March 2nd Read Across America Day
    • Guest Readers will be arranged for classes that want them
    • Each class is encouraged to have at least 30 minutes of DEAR (drop everything and read) time
    • March Madness Voting opens
      • Voting is for the BEST Bluebonnet books.  Check out the pairings here:  http://malvernlc.weebly.com/tournament-of-books.html

      • Students are encouraged to KEEP READING these books!  I have MANY PRIZES ready to give out!  Please feel free to re-print and remind students about our Leaders are Readers incentives

Color Printer:  The color printer IS back up and printing.  Again, PLEASE print to this printer with the utmost of care.  Only print things that NEED to be in color and print only files you trust.  To access the color printer you will need to UNINSTALL what you have and reinstall the new printer with IP Address:  10.28.10.5

Wish List:  I am posting a HUGE WISH LIST display near my office for students to contribute to, but would LOVE to hear your wishes too.  Please let me know if there are any books or materials that you would like to see in the Malvern collection.

Technology:  I just came back from TCEA and my head is spinning with great ideas and new learnings.  If you have NOT looked at See-Saw yet, GO check it out:  http://see-saw.dreamhosters.com/  I would LOVE to get MANY Malvern teachers using this next year.  I also love Pear Deck, ReWordify, Quill, Ifttt, Doodle Buddy and so many many more that I will share over time.

Anything else?!  If you need anything or have upcoming research, technology or any projects I might be able to help with….please let me know.  I am here to support you!
